Leadership and Dedication: Asma Awkal Recognized at LAU Club Awards Ceremony

Asma Awkal, a TLS alumna, won the Commitment and Dedication Award at the LAU Club Awards Ceremony. This remarkable award was only given to three students from all club committees, recognizing their outstanding leadership and hard work throughout the year.

Asma, inspired by the MEPI TLS program and its mission, gives credit to the program saying, “Had it not been for the program I would not have joined the Intersectional Feminist Club committee.” The program opened her eyes to the importance of inclusion and inspired her to always hold her gender lens with her. With this new perspective, she nominated herself for the committee and won one of its four seats.

Through Asma’s hard work and dedication, the Intersectional Feminist Club has held more than 15 events on campus. These events aimed to spread awareness about issues such as gender and media, women’s rights, gender-based violence, peacebuilding, and inclusion. Additionally, the club worked to sponsor and support women-owned small local shops, recognizing the importance of community support during the ongoing economic crisis. The club also held fundraising events to support the Beirut National Forest and Cancercom for women who suffer from cancer.

Asma’s commitment to her community is evident in the club’s efforts to support women. She says, “These events would not have taken place without what I had learned through my participation in the MEPI TLS program. The program is the reason for this success!”

With her dedication and the efforts of the club members the Intersectional Feminist Club also won “The Most Active Club Award”.
