Empowering Cancer Patients: Sara ElKoussa’s Journey to Making a Difference
December 3, 2024
Cancer. A word that carries fear, stigma, and an often-unspoken burden. In Lebanon, where the incidence of cancer is among the highest in the Arab world—11,600 new cases were reported in 2020 alone—the impact of the disease is profound. The challenges have only deepened with Lebanon’s economic crisis, as families struggle to afford the increasing cost of treatment. Amid these struggles, Sara ElKoussa, a TLS alumna (’21), has turned her personal journey of loss and resilience into a transformative initiative: CancerCom.
Sara’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Though she initially beat the disease, a painful recurrence led to her passing in September 2019. Inspired by her mother’s memory and determined to address the needs she witnessed firsthand, Sara founded CancerCom in September 2020. Her goal was clear: to bridge gaps in the cancer community through the power of youth networks and holistic care.
“I realized that while families focus on finding and funding treatment, many other needs—nutritional, emotional, and logistical—are left unmet. I wanted to change that and support the cancer community in every way possible,” Sara shared.
CancerCom has made a tangible difference in the lives of many. Collaborating with the LAU Nutrition Program, the initiative has provided free online nutritional consultations to over 70 patients, improving their dietary habits and overall well-being. In partnership with Siira, a mental health platform, it has facilitated free online support groups, reaching 62 patients and caregivers. CancerCom has also connected nearly 80 patients with NGOs and volunteers offering clinical assistance, providing critical support during their cancer journey.
To extend its impact, CancerCom launched community-focused health tracks promoting healthier lifestyles. The profits from these activities go directly toward helping underprivileged cancer patients cover treatment costs. So far, the initiative has raised approximately $8,500, significantly easing the financial burden for many families.
Beyond direct support, CancerCom is raising awareness and promoting education. Collaborating with local NGOs and educational institutions, the team has reached over 1,700 students through webinars and in-person events, cultivating informed and empathetic communities. With a dedicated team of 12 young volunteers from diverse backgrounds, CancerCom has become a beacon of hope and resilience.
“Combating Cancer in Community” is more than just CancerCom’s slogan—it’s a call to action. The initiative’s work aligns with the MEPI’s emphasis on social resilience, education, and community empowerment. It’s a powerful reminder of how youth-driven action can inspire change and create lasting social impact.
Sara’s journey and CancerCom’s story illustrate how challenges can also be turned into opportunities for meaningful action. By addressing the cancer community’s diverse needs, Sara is not only honoring her mother’s memory but also empowering others to rise above the difficult circumstances and create positive change.
